The 2024 elections will be the fifth held in the post-1998 era of democratization. They also represent a crucial turning point in determining the future direction of Indonesian democracy. Although previous studies have noted serious problems in Indonesian democracy, elections remain a democratic mechanism trusted by the public as the only legitimate means of transferring power. Therefore, free, honest, fair, and accountable elections are a key prerequisite for elections that are beneficial and meaningful to democracy.
Achieving free, honest, fair, and in-depth elections is no easy feat, as Indonesia’s elections are among the largest and most complex in the world. Furthermore, the challenges facing elections are significant. The practice of vote buying and vote buying, the politicization of ethnic, religious, racial, and intergroup (SARA) issues, the disconnect between voters and election participants, and the lack of accountability and political representation are some of the crucial issues frequently highlighted by the public.
The Empowered Voter Pocketbook is part of PUSKAPOL UI’s efforts to contribute to the success of elections and strengthen the people’s sovereignty in democracy by empowering the public to become empowered voters. This book contains important information on the 2024 Election, what voters must do to exercise their right to vote, and ensures that voter participation in the election process is significant and beneficial for strengthening democracy.
We hope this book will not only serve as a practical guide for voters, but also serve as a political education tool utilized by election organizers, civil society, community groups, and even higher education institutions and schools. As a campus research institute focused on elections and democracy, PUSKAPOL UI hopes this initiative will make a positive contribution to strengthening democracy in Indonesia.
