The Center for Political Studies (PUSKAPOL) of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of the University of Indonesia (UI) and the General Elections Commission (KPU) of Tasikmalaya Regency conducted a study on the implementation of the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections in Tasikmalaya Regency. The study highlighted the complex dynamics of local democracy, from candidacy issues and low voter turnout to the challenges of oversight and the use of technology in elections.
Through this Policy Brief, PUSKAPOL UI provides several policy recommendations to strengthen the integrity and quality of local democracy. These recommendations include aligning regulations with the Constitutional Court’s constitutional interpretation, increasing the capacity of election organizers, implementing an open data-based information system, and strengthening public participation and civil society oversight.
Tasikmalaya’s experience serves as an important mirror for national efforts to improve the governance of the simultaneous regional elections, making them more inclusive, transparent, and with integrity. These findings are expected to serve as a reflection and reference for organizers, policymakers, and the public in realizing a participatory and high-quality electoral democracy.
