The Center for Political Studies (PUSKAPOL) at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia, in collaboration with the General Elections Commission (KPU) of Tasikmalaya Regency, conducted a study on the implementation of the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Head Elections in Tasikmalaya Regency. This study highlights complex local democratic dynamics, ranging from candidacy issues and low voter turnout to oversight challenges and the utilization of technology in elections.
Through this Policy Brief, PUSKAPOL UI provides several policy recommendations to strengthen the integrity and quality of local democracy. These recommendations include aligning regulations with the constitutional interpretations of the Constitutional Court, increasing the capacity of election administrators, implementing open data based information systems, and strengthening public participation and civil society oversight.
The Tasikmalaya experience serves as an important reflection for national efforts to improve the governance of Simultaneous Regional Elections to make them more inclusive, transparent, and integrated. These findings are expected to serve as material for reflection and a reference for administrators, policymakers, and the public in realizing a participatory and high quality electoral democracy.
