Mahathir’s leadership since 1981 has displayed a distinctly different character from his predecessors. This shift in orientation coincided with efforts to alter the segmentation of indigenous culture, which seemed incompatible with industrial society. The policy of realigning relations with Britain, its former colony, was linked to efforts to uphold national identity. Improving relations with Islamic countries in the Middle East was linked to accommodating fundamentalist movements within the country. The policy of looking eastward (to Japan and South Korea) was intended to stimulate changes in all aspects of society toward an industrial society while securing capital for development. Strengthening and relying on shared policies within ASEAN helped ease tensions in relations with other countries in the region. Meanwhile, establishing diplomatic relations with the South Pacific aligned with efforts to uphold the independence of newly independent nations and states in this century.
