The Civil Society Coalition for the Codification of the Electoral Bill, comprising Perludem, Pusako FH Universitas Andalas, Puskapol UI, the Indonesian Women’s Coalition (KPI), Netgrit, ICW, PSHK, and Themis Indonesia, calls for an urgent agenda of electoral and political party reform in Indonesia.
This call stems from increasing public disappointment regarding the weak accountability of elected representatives and the lack of checks and balances between the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Government. The Coalition believes that the current electoral system strengthens political cronyism rather than democracy.
In an official release, the Coalition advocates for, among other things:
- Revision of the Election Law, drafted transparently, inclusively, and participatively.
- Implementation of a mixed-member proportional (MMP) electoral system to enhance representation and governmental effectiveness.
- Democratization of internal political parties, including a minimum 30% representation for women.
- Abolition of the parliamentary threshold and the DPR’s fit & proper test for election organizers.
- Transparency of campaign funds, auditing of political parties, and implementation of e-recapitulation for accuracy and openness of election results.
Through this appeal, the Coalition invites the public to collectively oversee the agenda for electoral and political party reform to strengthen democracy and popular sovereignty.
