Amidst debates over the high cost of politics, the effectiveness of Pilkada administration, and the idea of \u200b\u200breturning regional head elections to the Regional People&#8217;s Representative Council (DPRD), this study examines the importance of considering public preferences, which various surveys have shown support for direct Pilkada implementation. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This study examines the implementation of direct regional elections (Pilkada) from 2005 to 2020 and its<strong> impact on improving local governance, particularly in terms of improving public services, political accountability, transparency, and government performance. <\/strong>The study also examines the dynamics surrounding the elections, including competition and nominations, political costs and the role of campaign teams, the relationship between regional heads and political parties, and regulatory changes from asynchronous to simultaneous elections. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To examine this relationship, this study examines four main aspects: c<strong>ompetition and candidacy in regional elections, election implementation and administration, public services, and local government performance. <\/strong>The study also considers diverse regional contexts, including specific regions such as Aceh, Yogyakarta, Papua, and Jakarta, as well as how the political and institutional characteristics of each region influence election implementation and local governance. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, this study departs from <strong>the argument that direct regional elections have contributed to the creation of better local governance in Indonesia.<\/strong> By examining the interactions between political actors, political institutions, regional election organizers, and stakeholders at the local level, this study provides an overview of the achievements, challenges, and dynamics of direct regional elections in encouraging change and improvement in regional government. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read the full report: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/puskapol.fisip.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/laporan-Akhir-Kajian-Evaluasi-pelaksanaan-Pemilu-Kepala-Daerah-Secara-Langsung-Pilkada-2005-2020.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/puskapol.fisip.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/laporan-Akhir-Kajian-Evaluasi-pelaksanaan-Pemilu-Kepala-Daerah-Secara-Langsung-Pilkada-2005-2020.pdf\">Here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/puskapol.fisip.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/laporan-Akhir-Kajian-Evaluasi-pelaksanaan-Pemilu-Kepala-Daerah-Secara-Langsung-Pilkada-2005-2020.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:600px\" aria-label=\"PDF embed\"><\/object><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The implementation of direct regional head elections (Pilkada) represents a significant change in the process of political decentralization in post-New Order Indonesia.
