Jakarta, April 28, 2025 \u2014 Amidst the slow pace of discussions to revise and improve election regulations in Indonesia, it is crucial to call for an urgent overhaul of the General Election Law (UU Pemilu). Furthermore, the Election Law package has been included in the priority national legislative program for 2025. This overhaul is not merely a technical or routine five-year agenda post-election, but rather a crucial step in restructuring and strengthening the foundations of Indonesia’s electoral democracy. <\/p>\n\n

Since its enactment in 2017, Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections has served as the basis for the implementation of political contests in Indonesia in the 2019 and 2024 elections. However, in the last two elections, we witnessed how weaknesses in the legal system have resulted in technical chaos, tensions between institutions, minimal protection of citizens’ political rights, and even become a gateway for political corruption. The problems that arise are not merely technical procedural issues, but touch on the substantive state of our democracy today, making it important to use it as a reflective mirror of the state of our democracy. Will democracy grow healthily and substantially, or will it stagnate in the shadow of elites vying for power? <\/p>\n\n

Betting on Time: Why It’s Important to Discuss It Immediately<\/p>\n\n

Time in politics is not just a technical marker, but a space full of consequences. If deliberations on the revision of the Election Law are postponed again, we will likely find ourselves back in an unfavorable situation: when political tensions are already heating up in the run-up to the election and public deliberative space is being pushed aside by pressing pragmatic interests. <\/p>\n\n
