The issue of women’s political representation remains a crucial topic for several reasons. First, political party elites continue to show resistance toward affirmative action policies, particularly as the General Elections Commission tightened affirmative requirements for political party registration and legislative candidate nominations. Political parties frequently argue that they face difficulties in recruiting female candidates, especially at the local level, causing the 30 percent representation requirement to be viewed more as a burden than an opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, the overall performance of women in legislative institutions has not yet met public expectations. Women often face a combination of internal challenges when deciding to enter politics, along with external structural barriers that hinder their participation and advancement. The emergence of corruption cases involving female politicians has further complicated arguments that women necessarily bring transformative change to a political arena traditionally dominated by men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, despite an increase in the number of women elected to legislative bodies, the past five years have seen a growing number of national and local policies that discriminate against women. This paradoxical situation calls for deeper analysis and the development of new strategic frameworks to promote women’s political representation in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This book presents a comprehensive portrait of women’s electoral success in the 2009 General Election. Researchers from PUSKAPOL UI collected and analyzed data on the number of seats won by women in the national legislature (DPR), provincial legislatures (DPRD Province), and district\/city legislatures (DPRD Regency\/City). The study aims to document the state of women’s political representation across Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the book provides detailed information on the number of seats won by women and the political parties that secured those seats throughout the country.
