On October 26, 2021, the Selection Team for Candidates for KPU and Bawaslu Members for the 2022-2027 Term held a meeting with the KPU Commissioners for the 2017-2022 Term to solicit input regarding the election process. The following are the input points provided by the KPU Commissioners for the 2017-2022 Term. <\/em><\/p>\n\n

  1. The KPU requires commissioners with integrity, as they will face numerous challenges and a heavy workload in carrying out their duties. Therefore, the selected commissioners must be proven individuals. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. There are several agendas that have been implemented by the KPU for the 2017-2022 term of office that need to be maintained, such as several information systems that were also inherited by the KPU for the previous term of office. The KPU hopes that the programs that have been initiated and developed by the KPU can be continued by the KPU for the 2022-2027 term of office. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. It is crucial for KPU commissioners to coordinate and communicate effectively with the secretariat. Therefore, mutual understanding and respect for each other’s duties and responsibilities are essential. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. The regulations governing elections have not changed. Since there are no revisions to the law, the General Elections Commission (KPU) for the 2022-2027 term needs to take anticipatory measures to mitigate several anticipated obstacles. Challenges such as the heavy workload encountered in the 2019 election and the pandemic require attention. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. The General Elections Commission (KPU) is preparing a roadmap for the Recapitulation Information System (Sirekap) for the 2024 Elections. Sirekap is divided into two sections: general elections and regional elections. These two aspects are handled differently due to their technical differences. Furthermore, the KPU is developing an information system for all stages, as pioneered by the previous KPU. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. In terms of regulations, the General Elections Commission (KPU) has prepared 19 draft KPU Regulations (PKPU) and 14 draft regulations related to regional elections, including improvements, amendments, new regulations, and regulatory consolidations. This is due to the unchanged Election Law, while there are challenges and complexities of evolving needs, such as holding elections during a pandemic. For example, during the 2020 regional elections, the KPU made several breakthroughs in coordinating with other stakeholders to regulate the mechanism for handling alleged violations of health protocols during campaigns. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. The elected General Elections Commission (KPU) will need to address the aftermath of the 2019 Election and previous elections. It is hoped that past issues can be resolved, and future elections will be better. Beyond political residue, the KPU also needs to anticipate societal divisions caused by disinformation, particularly in the lead-up to election day and vote counting. Equally important is the heavy workload of the 2024 Election. As many as 718 election officials died during the 2019 Election, and it is hoped this will not happen in the 2024 Election. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. The KPU hopes that the elected commissioners will have the courage to try to do things that aim to make future elections easy, cheap, fast, transparent, and accountable. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Future election regulations are expected to create a humane election design, streamline election management, and digitize elections (except for voting and vote counting). To support this, the KPU requires commissioners with integrity, experience, and a forward-thinking vision for stable election administration and resolving common issues. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Prospective commissioners need to be thoroughly trained on internal and external relationship patterns when working as a team. The selected commissioners must understand the position and role of each individual within the KPU, both within its members and within the secretariat. A solid internal KPU institution will also support its performance. Likewise, external relations, both between election organizers and between organizers and relevant stakeholders, are a frequent question for many parties, including the relationship between the KPU and the government and the House of Representatives (DPR), in determining the election schedule. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  11. KPU commissioners must understand that the KPU is a national, permanent, and independent institution. Furthermore, it is crucial for KPU commissioners to understand that they are national election leaders, not merely election managers. The KPU must be staffed with progressive-minded commissioners in the future to ensure effective and efficient elections, even within regulatory constraints. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n
