The 2014 General Election, which consisted of the legislative election in April and the presidential election in July, concluded with a number of important lessons for future electoral improvements. Following the elections, citizens returned to their daily lives while continuing to monitor the performance of their representatives in both the legislative and executive branches.
Who are these elected representatives? What are their backgrounds? These questions motivated PUSKAPOL, with support from the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (KPP & PA), to conduct a study on the profile of legislative members serving in the 2014–2019 term.
The research highlights the importance of understanding the political profiles of elected legislators. By examining factors such as gender, age, education, professional background, electoral district, vote totals, candidate list position, and other relevant characteristics, the public can gain a deeper understanding of their representatives.
The study also provides valuable information on the number of incumbents who secured re-election, the existence of family ties between legislators and political elites, and comparisons between the electoral success of male and female candidates. These data offer important insights into the development of political representation during Indonesia’s reform era.
To provide a comprehensive picture of legislative representation, the research analyzes data separately for male and female legislators, enabling a more detailed understanding of the composition and characteristics of the elected parliament.
