The unusual move by President Jokowi and Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) to wear traditional attire while attending the annual joint session of the MPR, DPR, and DPD has been met with a positive response. The two leaders are seen as aiming to showcase Indonesia’s cultural diversity.
“The appearance of the President and Vice President conveys a strong message that resonates with the content of the President’s speech specifically, a sense of pride in being an Indonesian nation that possesses extraordinary cultural and traditional diversity,” said Aditya Perdana, Director of the Center for Political Studies (Puskapol) at the University of Indonesia (UI), when asked for comment on Wednesday (August 16, 2017).
