The Civil Society Coalition for the Codification of the Election Law issued a statement on the importance of accelerating discussions on the revision of the Election Law as a prerequisite for building an institution with integrity for the 2029 elections. The press release, issued on March 5, 2026, highlighted the slow pace of deliberations on the Election Bill, despite it having been included in the National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) since 2025.
This press release discusses various strategic issues that require attention in the revision of the Election Law, including the need to codify election and regional election regulations, refine the election system design, strengthen election management institutions, enforce election law, ensure accountability for political funding, and ensure inclusive and democratic elections. Furthermore, the Coalition emphasizes the importance of accommodating various Constitutional Court decisions that have amended several provisions in Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections.
Through this release, the Civil Society Coalition for the Codification of the Election Law urges the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Government to immediately begin discussions on the revision of the Election Law in a transparent and participatory manner, and to complete it before the start of the selection process for KPU and Bawaslu members in October 2026. This step is considered crucial to ensure that the 2029 Election will be held with more integrity and accountability, and will be able to strengthen the quality of democracy in Indonesia.
