Women’s representation in politics is one of the important indicators for assessing the quality of democracy. The presence of women in legislative bodies is not merely about numbers, but also concerns the diversity of perspectives, experiences, and distinct needs between men and women in the decision-making process.
The 2024 election serves as a crucial moment to observe the extent to which affirmative policies, such as the minimum 30% quota for women legislative candidates, truly succeed in opening opportunities for women to be elected. The election results indicate an increase in women’s representation compared to the previous period; however, the overall number still has not reached the “critical mass” of 30% required to strengthen women’s political bargaining position.
Beyond the numbers, this profile also illustrates other significant dynamics, such as the educational background, age, and electoral base of women legislators. All of these aspects reflect how women strive to overcome structural challenges, patriarchal culture, and high-cost politics, as well as the extent to which political parties play a role in supporting women’s representation.
